Brooke Harris was fired from the Pontiac Academy for Excellence in Michigan after helping her students organize a fundraiser for Trayvon Martin’s family. She knew how important it is to give students opportunities to bring real-world experiences into the classroom. Her mainly African-American students wanted to know more about Trayvon Martin’s death, and Ms. Harris seized the teachable moment. Stories like Brooke’s are outrageous in their own right, but even worse, they create an atmosphere of fear that hobbles our best teachers. Sign the petition and tell administrators we will not tolerate the silencing of our nation’s best teachers. |

Dear Senators Gillibrand and Schumer, As one of your constituents and an artist, I would like to share with you my strong opposition to, and disappointment of your support for PIPA/SOPA. While I believe that Intellectual Property Right should be protected, what you are proposing is unacceptable. Our government should work for us, not the movie/music studios. To consider crippling the Internet and giving corporations a blank mandate to censor as they see fit (which is essentially what you are supporting) it preposterous! I strongly hope you will reconsider and retract your support for this initiative. I know I will reconsider MY vote the next time around if this proposal is successful. Kind regards, Dudley Cadet Massapequa, NY |
